Hardwood floors consist of solid pieces of wood with tongue and groove sides, and come in either pre-finished or unfinished styles. Solid wood floors are sensitive to moisture and it is recommended that they should not be fitted below ground level or over under-floor heating.
You can sand and refinish solid wood floors several times, which adds to their appeal and to their long life. Many solid hardwood floors are over 100 years old and still looking good!
These floors are constructed from several layers, cross-engineered for extra dimensional stability, making them suitable for use over under-floor heating. They have a top layer called the wear layer, which can be up to 8mm thick and which allows for refinishing if it becomes necessary. Engineered boards generally come pre-finished, cutting down on onsite mess.
Laminated flooring mimics the look of traditional woods while offering easy installation and lasting durability. At first glance, it can be difficult to spot the difference between hardwoods and laminates. What appears to be a natural wood grain pattern is really a thin layer of décor paper (a photographic image) under a tough protective film that is glued and pressed to a high-density backing board.
